How to Use the Ruoth 1M Nozzle Tip.

The 1M icing nozzle tip is easy to master and the saying 'practice makes perfect is certainly true. The best way to learn the different icing techniques that the nozzle tip can be used for is to bake a batch of cupcakes to decorate. Alternatively, you can simply fill an icing bag with buttercream icing and practise creating the different patterns and decorations on your worktop. Each time your icing bag is empty, you simply scrape the designs off your worktop and start again! The Ruoth 1M is very versatile and the various techniques can be used to create beautiful decorations for your cakes, biscuits and pastries. The open star shape of the nozzle tip is larger than many, which makes it easy to use. For the best results, it is good to be relaxed while you are icing.

The decorations.

You will be delighted that you have invested in the 1M piping tip because it makes decorating desserts, cakes and biscuits fun. Simply fit the 1M to your icing bag and fill your icing bag about half full for comfort and ease of use.

1M Designs

Classic star

Hold the piping bag upright with the piping tip gently touching the cake or biscuit, press the bag to push some icing through and as soon as you see the icing coming through the tip, stop pressing and remove the bag, leaving a pretty star shape of icing. A cake decorated with stars looks pretty, but to create a fun look for a children's animal birthday cake, ice stars closely together resemble animal fur!

Roses

This design of icing looks effective and can be used on the top of a cake, as a border or to cover the sides of a cake. To make each rose, pipe a circle of icing, releasing your pressure on the icing bag as you complete each spiral. If you are covering the side of a cake with roses, cover the whole cake with a thin layer of icing/frosting first and then start by icing roses around the bottom of the cake. It looks really good if you pipe the second row of roses in between the roses you piped on the first row. It looks very effective if you use several different shades of the same colour to create the roses.

Ruffle flowers

This pretty design is made in a similar way to the star, but keep pressing the icing bag so that more icing is forced through the nozzle tip and wiggle your wrist a little, left to right as this will help create a ruffled effect. When you are happy with the size and fullness of your flower, stop squeezing the bag and remove it from the flower.

Classic swirls

This decoration is similar to the one made with soft ice cream on a cone and always looks good. Holding the icing bag vertically above a cupcake or biscuit start the icing swirl off just a short distance from the outer edge and start piping the icing in a circular motion lifting your bag slowly as you ice and ensuring that you pipe over your starting point to give a tidy finish to your icing. Keep icing until you reach the middle where you should gently press down on the icing, to form a star design and then release your pressure on the bag so that the icing stops. The icing can be decorated with sprinkles if you wish.

Classic Swirl

Tall swirls

For this design, you begin icing from the outer edge of the cupcake or biscuit and work your way steadily towards the centre, using a little more pressure on the icing bag and lifting it at the same time so that your piping stands taller on the cake or biscuit. When you reach the centre, you press gently and then release the nozzle on the icing so that it forms a star to finish.

Rosette

The rosette is another popular classic used for decoration and can be made by piping a small circle. As you complete the circle, you stop squeezing the icing and give the end of the icing a little flick, in the direction of the piping.

Small Rosettes

The rope design.

This effective design is made by piping small overlapping circles of frosting/ icing in an anti-clockwise direction and in one steady flow of icing. You can pipe a rope edging to the top of a cake or biscuit or a smaller-sized pattern in the centre if you prefer.

Gorgeous borders for cakes.

There are a variety of attractive designs that you can make for borders. The first is to pipe small flowers around the bottom or top edge of your cake. This is done by pressing the nozzle against the cake by applying gentle pressure on the icing bag and then releasing the pressure and moving the nozzle tip so that a flower has been formed. If you wish, you can pipe add small decorations such as an edible silver dragée, to the centre of each.

Another effective design can be achieved by icing a scroll. Hold the icing bag at a slight angle with the tip touching the base of the cake. Lift the nozzle tip up a little as you squeeze the icing bag and then lower the nozzle as you stop squeezing – a similar action to a wave. Where the first scroll ends, is your starting point for the second scroll and you repeat the process around the cake – trying to keep the scrolls similar in size. Once you are feeling super confident with this technique you can try making a right-hand scroll, followed by a left-handed scroll – which you begin, halfway along with the first scroll, this takes a little practice but is very effective as it looks like a plait.
