This is a question we have asked our cake decorating team to understand the reasons why some cake decorators still buy plastic cake scrapers instead of metal cake scrapers. The team compared Ruoth cake scraper features with those of plastic cake scraper to find out or investigate which of the two scrapers give the best results or outcome in the icing task. A cake scraper does what it is supposed to do, but professional cake decorators pay attention to finer details while scraping the cake. The difference presented by the metal or plastic cake scraper in the finished smoothly scraped cake, can easily be judged by the cake creator.
The more cake orders you receive from your customer, the better the tools you need to use to maintain quality, clean and creative cakes. You need a dishwasher-friendly cake scraper, versatile and long-lasting.
There are a few factors to consider when smoothing buttercream or ganache-covered cake.
Applying heat on the scraper.
Smooth scraping.
Sturdiness.
Applying heat on the scraper.
Yes, there is something unique about dipping a cake scraper in hot water. Safety first! But it makes perfect sense why you would do this. The heat on the cake scraper will melt the buttercream and make it easier to scrape. There are a few ways to do this, up to heating up the scraper with a cooking torch. The question is can you do this with either the Ruoth Metal Cake Scraper or other plastic scrapers?
After frosting and scraping the cake, towards the end, we want to remove all the flaws such as bubbles or any imperfections while scraping out the final layer of your buttercream. You can either dip your scraper in super hot water or place it under running hot water and wipe it with a clean towel/paper towel. At this point, the cake scraper should maintain the heat, slowly smooth the buttercream, the heat on the scraper will easily remove the icing off the cake to give the cake a smooth finish. This method can be applied on a plastic cake scraper but using super hot water will bend the scraper providing maybe a few good uses on the scraper before it is of no use. This is where the metal cake scraper comes in handy, it can absorb and sustain the heat for a few moments. Most importantly the heat will not destroy the metal cake scraper.
Smooth Scraping.
All scrapers can give a good smooth finish look especially if you have moved up from using a butter knife for scraping your cake. However, paying attention to details will highlight and effortlessly notice the differences between metal or plastic scraped cakes. When the research team focused on the best product for our best customers, they mentioned that the plastic scraper is not smooth enough, it leaves lines on the frosting. This occurs due to the product life of the plastic cake scraper, eventually, even with the best maintenance, it damages quickly. The edge of the scraper starts to chip away or bend. As a cake decorator, this is the last thing you need to worry about on top of a deep-seated desire of making a perfect scrape. So, the plastic scraper will do the job but if you are looking for a clean-cut and sharp edge finish scrape, perhaps you should consider Ruoth Metal Cake Scraper which will surely help move you in the practice or arena of the professionals.
Sturdiness.
Is it good to have a sturdy cake scraper?
Flexibility on a scraper is good to an extent. However, if the scraper is too flimsy to the point where there is no return for its shape, maybe a sturdy metal scraper will be the perfect tool. This can happen if you have a heavy load of icing on the cake or scraping ganache. It can lead to the plastic cake scraper bending or breaking. There are sturdy plastic cake scrapers in the market, the downside is that if they are too stiff they will end up breaking when pressure has been applied. There is no midpoint for elasticity with plastic in comparison with a good metal cake scraper when it is about scraping the icing, you require a scraper that will not bend or break while using it and will maintain its form to give you a smooth even finish.
Maybe the Ruoth way?
When making a purchase decision for a good cake scraper, quality and ease of use have to be top of your list. There are many cake scrapers in the market, and on average you will find a professional cake decorator with more than one scraper. Ultimately there will always be a cheaper option in the market with its own limit. Choose a sturdy cake scraper that will give you an easy time scraping a heavy load of buttercream or thick ganache. Impress clients with a creative professional appearance on a smoothly scraped frosting. Being a professional cake decorator means having the best tool available, a cake scraper that is easy to clean, dishwasher friendly, and does not chip while scraping.
